General update v8

This weekend I drove out to the location of where my house use to stand a long time ago. It was moved about three miles to its present spot sometime between 1955 and 1960. I wanted to take a few pictures and bring back a few bricks from the old fireplace.

After wading thru some stickery weeds, nettles, and spikey grass seeds poking thru my socks, I wasn’t able to locate exactly where the fireplace was since it was buried beneath a mound of rubble. I did find a few bricks and a few other items of interest.

Here’s an old water meter. I guess municipal water service is, or was, out here? It’s pretty darn remote, so it’s a little odd.

I found this large tank out in the field. Not sure what it was used for, but it looks pretty old.

I’m guessing this held fertilizer? Again, I don’t know what this was for.

Found an old tractor caught up in some trees. The tree growing around the wheel looks pretty gnarly.

Here’s an old bush gone wild. It’s right on top of the site where the house was. There were a lot of bugs buzzing in it so I wasn't about to step inside.

This is a mound of dirt and limestone with old gas pipes sticking out of it. My guess is that the fireplace was somewhere over here. Found a brick here too!

There was a pond right next to the house, which was probably nice to have back then. Just walk out a few yards and catch some dinner!

I’ve also been spending a lot of time cleaning the kitchen up. Despite the shabby handiwork of the previous owner, I intend to leave it as is for now. Some day in the future I’ll restore it back to a period appropriate classic kitchen.

A before and after of the sink. I didn’t think to take a picture of it when it was full of bugs and mouse poop, so it already looks much better in the “before” photo than it actually looked. Also this sink isn't very well bolted down; if it weren't for the connected pipes, you could lift this puppy clean off the couter!

The whole kitchen is now clean enough that you can keep stuff in the cabinets, counter, drawers and wherever without getting it infected. I had to pretty much shovel out a bunch of dirt, dust, and muck from the cabinets. I plan to scrub the floor down better since there’s still some grime the mop wasn’t able to remove.

Oh and I also got the well repaired! Sort of... The guy didn't install a water softener, so I'll try and have him do that. I'm also still waiting to hear back on the water lab test result.

      • I visited an agricultural museum recently, and there were many old tractors like that, pretty neat
